The Art of Iqbal Hussain — A Retrospective
“Hussain spent his life painting the women of the neighborhood he never left, insisting, canvas after canvas, that they be seen as fully as anyone else.”
Looking Back: The Art of Iqbal Hussain is a complete visual survey of one of Pakistan's most significant and most overlooked painters. Born and raised in Lahore's Heera Mandi, Hussain spent his life painting the women of the neighborhood he never left, insisting, canvas after canvas, that they be seen as fully as anyone else.
This monograph brings together decades of his work for the first time: portraits and household scenes, the footpath exhibition at Alhamra that first brought him public attention, his years as a teacher at the National College of Arts, and a body of self-portraits in which Hussain placed himself inside the same visual language he built for his subjects.
Compiled by gallerist Zainab Shakir Yasin, founder of ArtScape Pakistan, this book is both an art historical record and a personal tribute to an artist whose work insisted on dignity where the world offered none.
